Joshua's Starry Night Vineyard, Calaveras Co., Sierra Foothills

2016 marked my first move into the direction of vineyard management with Joshua's Starry Night Vineyard in Calaveras County.  JSN is planted at approximately 1700 feet elevation and is situated at the southern central end of the Sierra Foothills. The geology here is extremely diverse with quartz, schist, granite, limestone, and volcanic rock making up the bulk of what's under vine. In 2016 I consulted with the vineyard manager and we decided to dry farm and not till the soil.

The grapes grown here are Viognier, Syrah, and Mourvedre.

The Oakstone Vineyard, Nevada County, Sierra Foothills

This vineyard was planted in 2001.  Everything's is situated on an east facing slope at 1800 feet elevation.  The geology is Granite under iron rich clay.  I've had the great fortune of being able to work with this vineyard for three years.  The fruit coming from this site is incredible, very precise I would have to say.  There is cut here, and density, deep earth notes, with pure fruit expression, and beautiful acidity.  Varieties grown are: Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Syrah, Mourvédre, Carignan, Petite Sirah, Cinsault, Grenache.

Heart & Stone, Placerville, Sierra Foothills

This is Heart & Stone, located just outside Placerville in El Dorado County.  It's all Zinfandel.  Yields are crazy low, maybe 1 tone to the acre.  In 2016, the grapes made a beautiful red fruited wine with supple tannins and aromas of orange peel, sandalwood and a forest floor like earthiness of soy and mushroom. This is unlike any Zin I have ever had, not heavy, ethereal.
