Joshua's Starry Night
2017 marks my first move into the direction of vineyard management with JSNV in Calaveras County. JSNV is planted at approximately 1700 feet elevation and is situated at the southern central end of the Sierra Foothills. The geology here is extremely diverse with quartz, schist, granite, limestone, and volcanic rock making up the bulk of what's under vine. In 2016 I consulted with the vineyard manager and we decided to dry farm and not till the soil. The wines I made, a Mourvédre and Syrah show great promise. They are delicate and floral with a smokey back note.
This year, I have taken over management, partnering with a friend, together we have agreed to continue without irrigation and no tilling. We hope to produce approximately 10 tons, or 650 cases of Syrah, Mourvédre, and Viognier.
